Do you believe in Santa “Paws”? At Bowman Veterinary Hospital, we certainly do! Join us in making this holiday season a happy one for pet shelters!

Gifts You Can Give to Help Shelter Pets

Whether government or non-profit, dog shelters and cat shelters generally rely on the generosity of their communities to care for pets in need. You can help shelters by donating basic care supplies and non-expired food items. Not every shelter or rescue will be able to use or accept certain items, so contact them directly to see what they need most. Usually, you can drop off:

  • Beds, blankets, and towels
  • Pet-safe shampoos, brushes, and combs
  • Unopened canned food, bags of kibble, and treats
  • Toys
  • Crates and carriers
  • Collars and leashes
  • Monetary donations

Many shelters make giving much-needed dollars so easy with “Donate” buttons on their website and social media.

Pet holidays will be merrier and brighter when you help meet the basic needs of rescue pets!

Offering Your Valuable Time

If you would rather avoid the hustle and bustle of shopping centers during this busy time of year, you may be able to donate your time instead of your purchases. Rescue groups are often in need of volunteers who will spend play time with the dogs and cats in their care, or who will help with dishes, laundry, and kennel cleaning. If you would like to be a busy “elf” this holiday season, call a local shelter to find out if you can help.

What Do Pet Shelters Really Need?

When you reach out to dog and cat shelters, pay close attention to the details they share. They might have more cat beds or dog toys than their storage space can handle, so you won’t want to overload them with those items.

And maybe more importantly, they might have age requirements for certain volunteer activities. They might also have restrictions on the food or treats that they can accept. Prescription medication and parasite prevention may or may not be on their wish lists. Usually, such guidelines are in place for the safety of both the pets and the people on-site. Follow their procedures closely because they just want what’s best for everyone involved.

Give Local This Season

We at Bowman Veterinary Hospital want to shine the holiday lights on local pet shelters this season. If you have pet supplies, money, or time to spare, please reach out and offer your support, whether it’s during this holiday season or at any point in the year.

Holidays for dogs and cats may not involve lighting candles or decorating trees, but the spirit of giving is important for rescue pets—this season and always. When you give to pet shelters, the gift of time, money, or essential items truly spreads holiday cheer!
